High-level technology has developed, and what people have imagined is becoming a reality. Have you heard of the Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart home service? A smart home is a service that connects home appliances such as televisions and air conditioners to control water, electricity, and Closed-Circuit Televisions (CCTV) through a network. For example, GIGA Genie, NUGU, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) speakers that can be used in conjunction with applications are among the products available. Seoul City also offers services for elderly people living alone using IoT. Real-time monitoring is carried out, and if there is no movement for a long time or if there is a suspected temperature abnormality, they are immediately visited. So why is this gaining global attention? Today, the IoT market is an area of enormous opportunity. The IoT is expected to create a world where everything is connected to the Internet.
IoT refers to the interconnection of tangible and intangible objects to provide new services without explicit human intervention. It is important to connect not only computers but also people, things, spaces, intangible data, etc., to analyze and share the varied information collected from them. The types of IoT can be divided into individual, public, and industrial. An example of an individual IoT is a body sensor inserted into a person’s body to observe the necessary information and collect data to treat any abnormalities immediately. In addition, Google is working to build a connected car based on the Android operating system by forming the Open Automotive Alliance centered on Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai, and NVIDIA. The public IoT is based on information and communications technology and includes a smart city where residents interact effectively by accessing various city data such as transportation and public administration. In New York City, the domain awareness system was constructed in cooperation with Microsoft with CCTV, radioactivity detectors, and vehicle license plate recognition devices. The industrial sector has developed significantly since the term Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) was coined. IIoT is the development of a distributed control system of interconnected networks with computer industries, including manufacturing and energy management. The importance of the IIoT is increasing due to various problems, such as the spread of COVID-19 and the shortage of skilled workers.
The IoT is becoming more prominent in the era of “untact” (a compound word of “un” and “contact”) brought about by COVID-19. An unmanned market such as Amazon Go by Amazon and Bingo Box by Alibaba is a type of contact IoT service. In addition, IoT elements such as kiosks, internet protocol address cameras, telemedicine devices, and AI robots will become essential technologies in our lives in the future. As many companies continue to apply IoT technology to various things, it is expected to be used in applications other than smartphones, where it has been used most often.
