[Feature] Can ChatGPT and Education Coexist?

No.163 / Apr 17, 2023

Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is mentioned in everywhere. In news articles, YouTube videos, and social media, we can find content about ChatGPT easily. What then is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is developed by the company OpenAI, which works on Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and deployment. OpenAI described ChatGPT as a model which interacts in a conversational way to provide a detailed response in a prompt.

As the popularity of ChatGPT increases, a lot of people have tried to use it for many reasons. They can get the answers to questions, from the simple ones to the more complex one, like asking the code for a programming process. ChatGPT definitely penetrated educational area as well. Especially in universities, students have started using ChatGPT as a supervisor for their learning. Students ask questions about materials they find difficult to deal with personally. As a result, they have realized that using ChatGPT for their assignments or tasks from school is very helpful and convenient. This trend has led to reckless usage of ChatGPT on educational sites. They do not use ChatGPT as just an adviser; rather, it has become an assignment machine. Students simply ask questions about their assignment and copy the answers of ChatGPT to their worksheets. In some public schools in New York, it was decided not to assign homework personally. They substituted assignments for in-school examinations and banned access to AI like ChatGPT. The situation in Korea seems similar. Owing to the popularity of ChatGPT among Korean school students, they have started using ChatGPT as a tool for assignments. Under this circumstance, Korean educational institutions discuss the usage of ChatGPT. For example, Korea University announced the guideline of using generative AI and emphasized the right of using AI for learners. However, at the same time, it warned about incorrect usage, including cheating, a lack of critical thinking, and indiscriminate acquisition of information. To prevent these issues, Korea University gave professors the authority of allowing the usage of generative AI in their classes. The types of assignments have also been changed into those using empirical data or analyzing materials from original types such as researching and calculating. The students should describe the process of receiving feedback from their companions or professors during the process of completing assignments. To sum up, Korea University encourages students to use AI as an assistant, but not as an assignment machine.

Although there have been numerous AI chatbot programs such as i LUDA and simsimi in Korea, people got shocked by the fact that the level of AI regarding answering questions requiring in-depth major knowledge became this high. As AI is being progressed daily, our society could become abundant and knowledgeable. However, considering educational sites, there might be some different concerns about AI. Soon, many guidelines such as that of Korea University would surround us. Some institutions would fully allow the usage of AI and some would not. Thus, people are focusing on what the educational community will say about the use of AI.
