At the 2020 Busan Contents Universiade (BCU), the “Ajou Nice” team won the grand prize. The BCU is a content creation challenge in which college students produce and exchange Social Networking Service (SNS) based videos on, for example, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. In this competition, video clips were gathered under the theme of changes in daily life experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The “Ajou Nice” team consisted of students Jeong Ju-yong, Park Hyun-ji, Jo Su-yeon, and Son Jong-wook of the Department of Culture and Contents, and Lee Chae-rin of the Department of Applied Chemistry & Biological Engineering. The award-winning music video tells the story of a freshman suffering from COVID-19. The Ajou Globe (The AG) interviewed the “Ajou Nice” team to learn about the interesting video and the competition process.

Q. How did you come to participate in the competition?

A. First, some members won the grand prize in a contest held within the Department of Culture and Contents. Then, Professor Hong Kyung-soo recommended we participate in this competition. We participated because we thought the theme of the competition and our video were perfectly matched.

Q. Is there any reason why these five students formed a team together?

A. The four have been together since they participated in the school competition. A Department of Applied Chemistry & Biological Engineering student was one of our team members who helped us a lot when making songs. Only students from the Department of Culture and Contents could participate in the school competition, but they all participated in the BCU.

Q. Please explain the music video “Passing the Fall.”

A. There is a feeling that Koreans have called “han” (the emotion of deep resentment). The music video is a work that recreates the resentment of freshmen who cannot go to school due to COVID-19. This work consists of animated and live action components. In the animated scene, a freshman spends a gloomy day at home, and after it is transformed into a live action scene, he goes to school, takes off his mask, and plays with his school friends. It is also a work made in the hope that COVID-19 will end.

Q. Is there a special reason why you chose to make a music video?

A. We chose a music video because there were students who could compose music and animate videos. Without these two students, a music video could not have been made.

Q. It was very interesting to see the live action scene in the middle of the music video. Is there a reason why you changed the scene in the middle?

A. Originally, it was planned to be 100% animated, but after a meeting, there was the opinion that it would be better to express the desire for COVID-19 to end in a live action scene.

Q. Your team wrote and composed the song in the music video. We wonder if your team was interested in song and how the song was written and composed.

A. In fact, it was possible because Jo Su-yeon and Lee Chae-rin were in charge of the music. Both have good musical sense.

Q. We heard that your team had no experience in writing, composing, and animating. How long did it take to produce the music video and what was the hardest thing about making it?

A. It took about three weeks to complete the song and a month to complete the vocal recording and mixing. It was difficult to rent a studio because of COVID-19, and there was not enough equipment. Therefore, it was difficult to obtain the desired quality.
