[On Campus] Do Your Own Video Editing: DoVie

No. 153 / Sep 6, 2021

A start-up team at Ajou University’s Department of e-Business developed a video editing solution, DoVie, which applies an Artificial Intelligence (AI) function, creating new potential for technology start-ups. The team is receiving more attention in that the members have worked together and achieved AI modeling and development on their own, even if none of them has majored in science and engineering. DoVie was finally selected as the 2021 Preliminary Start-up Package conducted by the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Start-ups. The preliminary start-up package is a project that supports up to KRW 100 million in commercialization funds and provides programs that are essential for start-ups, such as start-up education, mentoring, and marketing, to help pre-start-up founders with ideas. Team DoVie’s product is DoVie, a deep learning-based cloud video editing solution that reflects the team’s name. The Ajou Globe (The AG) interviewed the DoVie team, which is composed of Do Jin-u, Seo Chang-deok, An Sang-ho, and Chae Jeong-u from the Department of e-Business students and graduates.

Q. Is there a particular reason your team decided to produce a video editing solution when you come up with an idea?

A. As the scale of personal Internet broadcasting grows, YouTube has completely permeated our lives. Short-form videos such as Shorts, Reels, and TikTok are also popular these days. However, our team found that video editors experience inconveniences when producing videos, and we have developed a video editing solution that can address those aspects. We wanted AI to be in charge of simple repetitive tasks that occur during video editing so that the editor could focus on creative tasks. Therefore, DoVie will provide a Video Highlighting function that extracts parts that are likely to be used as editing points in the video; Background Music (BGM) Recommendation suggests BGM and sound effects that are suitable for the video.

Q. Can you explain the production process of the editing solution DoVie?

A. Our team is advancing video analysis technology focusing on Computer Vision, especially Video Summarization and Video Classification. From AI modeling to web backend development, we are developing everything using a programing language called Python.

Q. What do you think is the strength of the team selected as the final candidate for the preliminary start-up package?

A. Owing to the characteristics of the department, all team members have Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) planning and data analysis capabilities, which helped us to grasp the inconvenience of existing solutions. We were also able to complete a well-balanced team because each member had specialized abilities in design, development, and AI. I think this capacity would have appealed to judges who were curious about whether a team had the capacity to create solutions.

Q. How do you feel about winning the project?

A. Even though the initial goal of winning a preliminary start-up package has been achieved, we are now focusing on service development. Our goal has become clearer, as we felt pressure to prove this project with tangible results beyond a vague plan. I believe that the project is still in its early stages. Taking this opportunity as a stepping stone, we will accelerate the business according to our plans.
