There are 612 international students at Ajou University in the first semester of this year, the largest ever. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the university’s opening, Ajou University held a “Korean Speaking Contest” for these international students. The purpose of this contest is to improve students’ academic performance and help them adapt to college life.
About 350 international students and Ajou University officials attended and encouraged participants at 11 a.m. on May 3 at Yeonam Hall. The contest consisted of preliminary round and the finals. The preliminary round was conducted with a written evaluation of the manuscript written by the students. A total of 10 students advanced to the finals to show off the Korean skills that they have honed so far. Even though it was not easy to tell their own story in another language, they surprisingly did it in Korean. At the final contest, students have presented a variety of topics such as life in Korea, and society for our future. As a result of the examination, the student who was honored with the grand prize is Kitmin, and he announced about “What Happened in Myanmar”. Myanmar has suffered a great number of casualties from military coups since early 2021 to the present. Myanmar’s citizens are still in fear because military have distorted and covered up facts, reduced the death toll, or fabricated the cause of death. Kitmin said, “I hope foreign students will study hard even in difficult environments and support Myanmar students who are continuing their studies in Korea,” adding, “I ask for your continued interest in the situation in Myanmar.”
International students are also engaged in a variety of activities at Ajou University. Ajou International Student Council “AIS” is holding many events and activities to help international students that have various experiences and stable college life. International students are showing off their potential by talking about the future beyond language barriers like bright stars shining in the sky. The Ajou Globe (The AG) hopes you guys have ‘아주’ (It means ‘very’ in Korean) special and happy moments as Ajou students.
