[On Campus] Newly Constructed Dormitory and Comprehensive Engineering Laboratory

No. 152 / Jun 7, 2021

The names of the new dormitory and comprehensive engineering laboratory have been determined, according to a survey conducted in February. The new dormitory is called Ilsin Hall, and the laboratory is named Hyegang Hall. Ajou University typically follows the tradition of borrowing dormitory names from the eight Suwon views. However, the school decided not to use that idea, opining that the remaining names were static and overly poetic. The name Ilsin Hall, however, was highly preferred by school members, who feel it inspires a positive, lively feeling.

Regarding the comprehensive engineering laboratory, the pen name of a Silhak scholar was selected to reflect academic characteristics of the departments that will use the building. As poll of opinions from school members found that Hyegang Hall was the most popular name. Hyegang is the pen name of Choi Han-gi, a scientist and scholar of the Joseon Dynasty. He established a new philosophy based on a deep understanding of Western natural science.

Ilsin Hall will be located in front of the International House, and the dormitory is available to medical and nursing students, among others. Construction began on November 14, 2020, and is scheduled for completion by February 28, 2022. Hyegang Hall will be located behind the College of Pharmacy building, and the construction start date is yet to be determined.
