No. 156 / Mar 7, 2022
Ajou University’s new dormitory “Ilsin Hall”, completed in February, has received applications for tenants for the first semester of 2022. The name of the building means “to get new everyday”. The first dormitory to be built since Gookje Hall opened in 2015, Ilsin Hall has drawn the attention of many students.
Ajou University hosts six dormitory buildings—Namje Hall, Gwanggyo Hall, Yongji Hall, Gookje Hall, Ilsin Hall, and Hwahong Hall—for international students. Of the 3,271 applicants for dormitories, 864 students applied to move into Ilsin Hall, which accounts for approximately 26% of the total applicants. Unlike existing dormitory buildings, which only have public shower facilities and restrooms, Ilsin Hall contains rooms with private showers. Common facilities are one of the most unsatisfactory features of the current dormitories, thus it may be a positive factor for Ilsin Hall; however, it will be quite inconvenient for students to clean their own bathrooms. The new dormitory features one basement-level floor and 11 floors above ground level. In addition, students are looking forward to using 50L refrigerators placed in each room.
As Ilsin Hall is a newly built dormitory, it will be equipped with relatively hygienic and clean facilities. Consequently, applications to live in the building have become highly competitive. Schools should devise measures to improve existing dormitory buildings that remain relatively underdeveloped, so that the inconvenience of students living in them can be resolved as soon as possible, and mitigate competition. Hopefully, all students can reside in dormitories, in comfort and safety.
