[On Campus] The Terrace Can Never Be a Safe Zone

No. 152 / Jun 7, 2021

The violation of administrative orders regarding evening gatherings on the terrace in front of Seong-ho Hall has became controversial topic in the digital student community. Numerous violations of the rule against private gatherings of five or more people have been reported. Moreover, some students are accused of drinking alcohol without wearing masks during these get togethers. Seeing posts about the violations, students expressed their concern and often criticized their misbehavior.

In the wake of this controversy, the school turned off all the terrace streetlights and put a notice on each table to remind students to demonstrate responsible behavior, including wearing masks. The notice also provides guidance about the ban on private gatherings of five or more people and mandatory mask enforcement. It further states that a fine of up to 100,000 will be imposed for violations under the Infection Disease Control and Prevention Act. Moreover, facilities may be closed, or students may be suspended from using them. In the event of a confirmed case after a group’s first offense, participants will be fined up to 3 million won and may be charged to reimburse related expenses.

The extended duration of the COVID-19 pandemic has left people increasingly tired and even get frustrated with related policies. Yet, there are still students who endure and abide by the guidelines to keep the Ajou University community safe. Since this pandemic is not over yet, students who defy the rules must critically reflect on what they have done and be more careful in the future. It is time for all students to raise awareness and make our campus a better place.
